Stoves

Why choose a stove?

There are two main reasons why people choose to have a solid fuel stove installed in their home. For many the choice is based on aesthetics. A solid fuel/wood burning stove provides a stunning, traditional and unusual focal point to a home. Nestling into a welcoming fireplace, a solid fuel burning stove provides an efficient and attractive way to heat not only a single room, but potentially a whole home.

From a pragmatic point of view, a stove enables householders to avoid the rising costs of oil, electricity and gas. A multi fuel stove (which burns fuels such as wood, wood pellets, wood chip or smokeless solid fuel) is a much more efficient way of heating a home than traditional open fires or heating systems that use fossil fuels.

The benefits of a stove

A solid fuel burning stove not only provides an aesthetically pleasing focal (and indeed talking) point, but it is also an incredibly efficient and sustainable method of heating a home. When correctly connected to a heating system and combined with efficient insulation, a stove can provide a very efficient and cost-effective heating source, especially since the recent sharp rises in gas, oil and electricity prices.

Not only using sustainable solid fuel rather than finite fossil fuels, the ratio between fuel used and heat provided is most impressive.

When compared to an open fire, from which 80 per cent of the heat produced goes up the chimney and only 20 per cent into a single room, a solid fuel burning stove emits approximately 80 per cent of its heat into a room, losing only 20 per cent up the chimney and into the atmosphere.

In comparison to a ‘normal’ central heating system a five bed terraced house which may cost £2,000 per year to heat in oil would cost approximately £450 in solid fuel/wood for a stove. A single stove can run a central heating and hot water system for just a fraction of the cost (in terms of finance as well as environmental costs) as other forms of heating.

So, it’s not rocket science (as they say). A solid fuel burning stove can save you money, reduce your carbon footprint and provide your home with that special (and cosy) finishing touch.
